Keep Your Weight Loss Goals Intact During the Holidays
The holiday season can present a challenge to anyone who’s dieting, even people who do fine the rest of the year. All of those big family get togethers and parties with friends and coworkers. You may have spend months focusing on eating healthy foods, but now all of a sudden you’re being offering candy, cookies, pies and cakes of every description. Lots of people just give in to the idea that it’s better to give up on dieting and living a healthy lifestyle during the holidays. It’s hardly uncommon for people to forget about their diets until the holidays are over, digging themselves a big hole they have to climb out of. But what if you’re really determined to not gain weight, or even lose it during the holidays? If you want to stay loyal to your diet and exercise program all through the holidays, it can be done.
Now is the time to redouble your efforts at the gym. There’s no other way to eat all these snacks, treats and feasts without gaining weight. You probably won’t be able to say "no" to all of the temptations. If you burn off calories at the gym (or wherever you work out), those holiday calories won’t have to cause you to pack on extra pounds. This doesn’t mean you have to spend hours on end at the gym -it’s often better to fit in shorter exercise sessions throughout the day when you get a chance. You may want to look into trying some different kinds of workouts that can accommodate your schedule.
You want to be aware of exactly what you’re eating, and writing it down is the best way to do this. Knowing what you’re taking into your body every day tells you what you need to work off when you go to the gym. It’s very helpful when you’re trying to lose weight to know for certain what you have and haven’t eaten. No one is perfect when it comes to their diets, and when you write everything down you’ll be aware of how "bad" -or trivial- your transgressions really are. A minor case of cheating on your diet might be turned into a major one by your guilt-ridden mind; this, then, can make it seem like it’s pointless to even try to stick to your diet. Keeping a written record, however, prevents your mind from playing such deceptive tricks on you.
Just like with every other time of year, you will have a much easier time with your weight loss efforts during the holidays if you work with a friend. Buddy up with a friend or coworker who is also trying to watch his or her weight. Having a partner in this effort can help both of you stay on track and avoid the many pitfalls that are everywhere this time of year. You’re more likely to stick with something when you’re accountable to someone else. You will have a better chance of succeeding with your holiday weight loss efforts if you have someone to help you plan and stay true to your diet and exercise program. There are so many things that you can do to help yourself stay on your diet and keep up your weight loss goals. Do not believe the people who tell you just to give up and then work even harder after the new year. You can do things right now to make it easier to have a good holiday season, stick to your goals and make it to the new year without having to feel guilty.
